Overview

This Privacy Policy describes how your personal information is handled in Enceladus on iOS, iPadOS and macOS.

Your locations stay yours

We do not collect, use, save, or have access to the locations you save or their names.

Your saved locations, your unit preferences, and your choice of which locations keep updating are stored on your device and, if you use iCloud, in your own private iCloud database so they stay in sync across your devices. This is accomplished by leveraging Apple’s CloudKit framework. Enceladus also keeps a small record in iCloud of which Premium messages you’ve already seen, so you aren’t shown them again on another device. Which locations you viewed most recently is kept only on the device you viewed them on. We cannot see anything stored in your iCloud account. Apple’s privacy policy can be found here.

Your location

Enceladus asks for access to your location only while you’re using the app, so it can show tonight’s forecast where you are. It asks for your approximate location by default, which is all a forecast needs. Using your location is optional: you can save and view other places without it.

Your location is never sent to us. To fetch a forecast, the app sends the coordinates of your location, or of a saved location, to Apple’s WeatherKit service. When you search for a place, your search text is sent to Apple Maps to find matching places. Both are handled by Apple under Apple’s privacy policy.

Purchases and Premium

Subscriptions to Enceladus Premium and tips are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never see your name, Apple Account, or payment details. Apple gives us sales reports that do not identify you.

Enceladus checks on your device whether you have an active subscription, and when you first downloaded the app, to know whether you bought it before it became free. This information comes from Apple and is not sent to us.

Advertising

If you don’t subscribe to Enceladus Premium, the location list shows a single advert for another app, provided by Kickstart Exchange. Kickstart Exchange recommends apps, not people: it does not track you or your device, and Enceladus shares nothing about you, your locations, or your forecasts with it.

To show an advert, the app sends Kickstart Exchange details about the app itself: its identity and version, your platform, and your App Store country. It also sends Apple’s signed proof that this is a genuine copy of the app from the App Store, which Kickstart Exchange checks and then discards. Kickstart Exchange records when an advert is shown or tapped, without anything that identifies you or your device, and keeps these records for about 30 days. Subscribing to Enceladus Premium removes the advert.

App analytics

To help us understand how people use Enceladus and decide what to build next, the app sends anonymous usage events to Plausible Analytics. These record which features are used (for example, saving a location, viewing a forecast, or opening the subscription screen), your unit and sort settings, whether location access is turned on, whether you subscribe or have bought a tip (but not what you paid), roughly how many locations you have saved (as a range such as “4-10”), and your app version and platform (iOS, iPadOS or macOS).

These events never include your locations, their coordinates or names, the names you give them, your search text, your time zone, or any identifier for you or your device. Like any internet request, each event reaches Plausible with your IP address and a standard header naming the app and your operating system version. Plausible uses these to estimate your approximate location (country, region and city) and to count unique visitors with a value that changes every day, so activity cannot be linked across days or traced back to you. Plausible does not store your IP address. This data is not used for tracking or advertising, is never sold, and is not shared with Kickstart Exchange. Plausible’s data policy can be found here.

You can turn this off at any time in Enceladus’s Settings, under Privacy › Share Anonymous Usage Data. The setting syncs through iCloud, so turning it off on one device turns it off on all of them.

We also receive the generic, anonymous statistics that Apple’s App Store Connect provides to developers when you have chosen to share them with app developers. These cannot personally identify you in any way.

Changes to this policy

If we change how Enceladus handles your information, we will update this page and the date at the top.
